Miami Vice

Plot Summary: Crockett and Tubb are back undercover in this 2006 remake of the classic 80's TV show. Following the slaughter of a team of undercover federal agents, the partners are thrown into the depths of a dark and complex network of globalized traffickers to infiltrate and avenge their fallen comrades.

Review: Miami Vice certainly retains the feel of a TV show turned feature film, but not totally in keeping with the original series. The film feels more like it was inspired by the original series as opposed to being a recent addition to the series - both in the directing and the general ambience of the film.

The delivery of the plot somehow manages to make a simple linear plotline confusing and hard to follow where in essence, it seems to be down to a simple revenge plot with multiple twists and turns left unexplored. If you find yourself confused while watching this film, it's probably best not to worry - you're not missing out on anything.

Colin Farrell and Jami Foxx provide a realistic and solid performance that, while it won't be winning any oscars, definitely keeps you enthused and entertained throughout. The supporting cast certainly held their own throughout the film and I personally thought John Ortiz was a fine casting choice - delivering just the right edge to his character.

Director Michael Mann has opted for a 'Police, Camera, Action' style of filming - lots of fast cuts and interesting close-ups and angles seems to be a double edged sword. While at times it provides a nice edge of danger and realism to the picture, at other times it can leave you feeling a little dizzy, trying to catch up with the imagery - the desired effect I would imagine, but unfortunately not always used to it's best. Overall, it's nice to see the stylish camera work as it's something a little different, but I feel that it could have perhaps been used a little bit better.

In Short: While Miami Vice certainly keeps you entertained for the entire duration, it is, in essence, an extended TV show with a decent budget. Unfortunately unmemorable, probably down to the hard-to-follow plot, the film is only worth your time if you have an aspirable urge to visit the silver screen. Otherwise, I would curb your curiousity and grab this title on DVD.
